J!DMS brings OCR text recognition to Joomla 6. Scanned invoices, till receipts, photos and PDFs are read automatically during upload and can then be searched in full text – without extra software on the server and without a paid OCR service.

Can Joomla recognise text out of the box?

No. Joomla stores uploaded images and PDFs as files but does not read their content. A scanned receipt is therefore invisible to the Joomla search. J!DMS closes this gap: it recognises the text of every document and stores it together with the file in your Joomla database.

How text recognition works in J!DMS

  1. PDFs with a text layer – for PDFs from your accounting software, online shop or office program, J!DMS reads the existing text directly. That is fast and error-free.
  2. Scanned PDFs and photos – if a PDF page has no text, it is rendered as an image and recognised with OCR. The same applies to JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF, for example a phone photo of a till receipt. J!DMS checks page by page, so mixed PDFs are no problem.
  3. Store and find – the file, the recognised text and a thumbnail are stored together in the database. You can then find the receipt by any word in it: supplier, invoice number, amount or item.

Why recognition runs in the browser

Classic OCR solutions need a program such as Tesseract on the server. Most web hosting plans don't allow that. J!DMS therefore uses Tesseract.js and pdf.js directly in the browser of the person uploading the receipts. This has three advantages:

  • It works on any ordinary Joomla hosting, including shared hosting.
  • The server is not loaded, even with many documents.
  • There is no external OCR service, no API key and no cost per page.

If you can install Tesseract and Poppler on your own server, you can additionally enable server recognition as a fallback in the options.

Languages, page count and settings

  • By default J!DMS recognises German and English at the same time. You can add further Tesseract languages in the options.
  • For long PDFs up to 50 pages are read by default, configurable up to 500.
  • The recognised text can be corrected in the edit view and re-recognised at any time – for one or many receipts at once.

Privacy

During text recognition the documents never leave your browser and your Joomla installation. There is no cloud the receipts are sent to. Only the program libraries (Tesseract.js, pdf.js and the language data) are loaded from a public CDN by default. For strictly GDPR-compliant operation, store these files on your own server and enter their addresses in the options.

Where text recognition reaches its limits

Printed text on clean scans (from about 300 dpi) and straight photos of receipts are recognised reliably. Handwriting, heavily faded thermal receipts, crumpled receipts and very small print are difficult. Even then the receipt can still be found by title, note, category and receipt date, and you can add important details to the text by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Does text recognition cost extra?

No. OCR is included in J!DMS Free (up to 20 documents) and J!DMS Pro; there are no per-page fees.

Which files are recognised?

PDF (with and without a text layer), JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF.

Do I need Tesseract on the server?

No. Recognition runs in the browser. Server recognition is only an optional fallback.

What about receipts that are already in the archive?

Select them in the list and start text recognition again. J!DMS then replaces text and thumbnail.

Which Joomla version do I need?

Joomla 6 with PHP 8.3 or later and MySQL or MariaDB.

Consumers have a right of withdrawal of fourteen days.

Right of withdrawal

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day of the conclusion of the contract.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we shall reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (with the exception of the supplementary costs resulting from your choice of a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us), without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract. We will carry out such reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

Early expiry of the right of withdrawal

In the case of a contract for the supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (here: the licence for J!DMS Pro with download key), the right of withdrawal expires when we have begun performance after you have

  • expressly consented to us beginning performance before the end of the withdrawal period,
  • acknowledged that you thereby lose your right of withdrawal once performance has begun, and
  • we have provided you with a confirmation of the contract on a durable medium (email).

You give the consent and the acknowledgement before the purchase in the customer area; you receive the contract confirmation by email after payment.

(1) These General Terms and Conditions (GTC) apply to all contracts you conclude with us via the website jdms.gk-medien.com.

(2) The provider and contracting party is GK Medien, Stefan Güth, Starenweg 7, 33803 Steinhagen, Germany, phone: +49 (0) 5204 - 9276288, email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., VAT ID: DE282276151.

(3) A consumer is any natural person who concludes a legal transaction for purposes that are predominantly outside their trade, business or profession (§ 13 German Civil Code, BGB). A trader is a natural or legal person or a partnership with legal capacity who, when concluding a legal transaction, acts in the exercise of their trade, business or profession (§ 14 BGB).

(4) Deviating terms of the customer do not apply unless we expressly agree to them.

§ 2 Subject of the contract

(1) J!DMS is an extension for the content management system Joomla for managing receipts and documents. J!DMS is free software licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later (GPL). The rights the GPL grants you to the software are not restricted by these GTC.

(2) We provide J!DMS Free as a free download. The free version manages up to 20 documents. There is no entitlement to provision, updates or support for the free version.

(3) The subject of the paid contract "J!DMS Pro" is the provision of the Pro version and a personal download key with which you can download new versions (updates) of J!DMS Pro via the Joomla update function or the customer area for the agreed term (licence). The Pro version removes the limit of 20 documents.

(4) The licence applies to one domain. You set the domain in the customer area, or it is set the first time an update is downloaded. You can change the domain in the customer area; the licence applies to only one domain at a time.

(5) The scope of functions is based on the description on our website at the time the contract is concluded.

§ 3 Customer account and conclusion of the contract

(1) You need a customer account to buy J!DMS Pro. The information you provide when registering must be complete and correct. Keep your login details secret.

(2) The presentation of J!DMS Pro on our website is not a binding offer but an invitation to place an order.

(3) The ordering process works as follows:

  • You log in to the customer area and create a licence there.
  • You confirm that you have read these GTC and the cancellation policy and accept the GTC, and you consent to the immediate start of performance of the contract (see § 7).
  • You click "Buy now" and complete the payment with PayPal. Until you complete the payment with PayPal you can cancel the process at any time; you can correct entries (for example the domain) beforehand in the customer area.

(4) By completing the payment you submit a binding offer. The contract is concluded when we activate the licence; this happens immediately after receipt of payment. You then receive a contract confirmation by email.

(5) The contract language is German. We store the text of the contract. We send you the contract confirmation with the contract details, these GTC and the cancellation policy by email. You can access the current GTC at any time at https://jdms.gk-medien.com/agb.

§ 4 Prices and payment

(1) The prices at the time of the order, as shown on our website and in the customer area, apply. All prices are final prices including statutory VAT. There are no shipping costs.

(2) Payment is made as a one-time payment via PayPal. The amount is due immediately upon ordering.

(3) You receive the invoice by email.

§ 5 Term, renewal

(1) The licence runs for twelve months from activation. It does not renew automatically; there are no recurring payments.

(2) You can renew the licence in the customer area by making another payment. If a licence that is still running is renewed, the new term follows on from the previous one.

(3) After the term has expired you can continue to use the version already installed. Updates and downloads of the Pro version are then no longer possible until the licence is renewed. Your statutory rights, in particular under § 7 and § 8, remain unaffected.

§ 6 Customer obligations, system requirements

(1) J!DMS requires Joomla 6, PHP 8.3 or later and a MySQL or MariaDB database. You are responsible for operating the website on which J!DMS is installed.

(2) J!DMS stores documents in the database of your website. You are responsible for making regular backups of your website and your database, especially before every update.

(3) You may not pass the download key on to third parties or use it for any domain other than the licensed one. In the event of a violation we may block the download key after a prior warning; your right to use the software under the GPL remains unaffected.

§ 7 Right of withdrawal

(1) Consumers have a statutory right of withdrawal. Details can be found in our cancellation policy. You can also declare the withdrawal online at https://jdms.gk-medien.com/vertrag-widerrufen.

(2) The right of withdrawal expires early if we have begun performing the contract after you have expressly consented to us starting performance before the end of the withdrawal period, you have confirmed your knowledge that you thereby lose your right of withdrawal, and we have provided you with a contract confirmation by email.

§ 8 Rights in case of defects and updates

(1) The statutory rights in case of defects apply. For consumers, in particular the provisions on contracts for digital products (§§ 327 et seq. BGB) apply, including the statutory obligation to provide updates necessary to maintain conformity with the contract.

(2) For traders, the limitation period for claims for defects is one year from provision. This does not apply to claims under § 9 (1).

(3) Please report defects by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with as precise a description as possible. The versions of J!DMS, Joomla and PHP and any error messages are helpful.

§ 9 Liability

(1) We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, under the Product Liability Act and to the extent of any guarantee given.

(2) In the event of a slightly negligent breach of an essential contractual obligation (an obligation whose fulfilment makes the proper performance of the contract possible in the first place and on whose observance you may regularly rely), our liability is limited to the damage typical for the contract and foreseeable at the time of conclusion. Otherwise, liability for slight negligence is excluded.

(3) For the loss of data we are only liable to the extent that would have occurred had you made regular backups appropriate to the risk (§ 6 (2)).

(4) The above limitations also apply in favour of our vicarious agents.

§ 10 Data protection

Information on the processing of your personal data can be found in our privacy policy.

§ 11 Dispute resolution

We are neither willing nor obliged to participate in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.

§ 12 Final provisions

(1) The law of the Federal Republic of Germany applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. For consumers, this choice of law only applies insofar as it does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory provisions of the law of the state in which you have your habitual residence.

(2) If you are a merchant, a legal entity under public law or a special fund under public law, the place of jurisdiction for all disputes arising from this contract is our place of business.

(3) Should individual provisions of these GTC be invalid, the validity of the remaining provisions remains unaffected.

Recipients of personal data

In the scope of our business activities, we cooperate with various external parties. In some cases, this also requires the transfer of personal data to these external parties. We only disclose personal data to external parties if this is required as part of the fulfillment of a contract, if we are legally obligated to do so (e.g., disclosure of data to tax authorities), if we have a legitimate interest in the disclosure pursuant to Art. 6 (1)(f) GDPR, or if another legal basis permits the disclosure of this data. Revocation of your consent to the processing of data

A wide range of data processing transactions are possible only subject to your express consent. You can also revoke at any time any consent you have already given us. This shall be without prejudice to the lawfulness of any data collection that occurred prior to your revocation.

IN THE EVENT THAT DATA ARE PROCESSED ON THE BASIS OF ART. 6(1)(E) OR (F) GDPR, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO AT ANY TIME OBJECT TO THE PROCESSING OF YOUR PERSONAL DATA BASED ON GROUNDS ARISING FROM YOUR UNIQUE SITUATION. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO ANY PROFILING BASED ON THESE PROVISIONS. TO DETERMINE THE LEGAL BASIS, ON WHICH ANY PROCESSING OF DATA IS BASED, PLEASE CONSULT THIS DATA PROTECTION DECLARATION. IF YOU LOG AN OBJECTION, WE WILL NO LONGER PROCESS YOUR AFFECTED PERSONAL DATA, UNLESS WE ARE IN A POSITION TO PRESENT COMPELLING PROTECTION WORTHY GROUNDS FOR THE PROCESSING OF YOUR DATA, THAT OUTWEIGH YOUR INTERESTS, RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS OR IF THE PURPOSE OF THE PROCESSING IS THE CLAIMING, EXERCISING OR DEFENCE OF LEGAL ENTITLEMENTS (OBJECTION PURSUANT TO ART. 21(1) GDPR).

IF YOUR PERSONAL DATA IS BEING PROCESSED IN ORDER TO ENGAGE IN DIRECT ADVERTISING, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO OBJECT TO THE PROCESSING OF YOUR AFFECTED PERSONAL DATA FOR THE PURPOSES OF SUCH ADVERTISING AT ANY TIME. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO PROFILING TO THE EXTENT THAT IT IS AFFILIATED WITH SUCH DIRECT ADVERTISING. IF YOU OBJECT, YOUR PERSONAL DATA WILL SUBSEQUENTLY NO LONGER BE USED FOR DIRECT ADVERTISING PURPOSES (OBJECTION PURSUANT TO ART. 21(2) GDPR).

Right to data portability

You have the right to have data that we process automatically on the basis of your consent or in fulfillment of a contract handed over to you or to a third party in a common, machine-readable format. • If the processing of your personal data was/is conducted in an unlawful manner, you have the option to demand the restriction of the processing of your data instead of demanding the eradication of this data.
  • If we do not need your personal data any longer and you need it to exercise, defend or claim legal entitlements, you have the right to demand the restriction of the processing of your personal data instead of its eradication.
  • If you have raised an objection pursuant to Art. 21(1) GDPR, your rights and our rights will have to be weighed against each other. As long as it has not been determined whose interests prevail, you have the right to demand a restriction of the processing of your personal data.

If you have restricted the processing of your personal data, these data – with the exception of their archiving – may be processed only subject to your consent or to claim, exercise or defend legal entitlements or to protect the rights of other natural persons or legal entities or for important public interest reasons cited by the European Union or a member state of the EU.

SSL and/or TLS encryption

For security reasons and to protect the transmission of confidential content, such as purchase orders or inquiries you submit to us as the website operator, this website uses either an SSL or a TLS encryption program. You can recognize an encrypted connection by checking whether the address line of the browser switches from “http://” to “https://” and also by the appearance of the lock icon in the browser line.

If the communication with us is encrypted, third parties will not be able to read the payment information you share with us.

Cookies, which are required for the performance of electronic communication transactions, for the provision of certain functions you want to use (e.g., for the shopping cart function) or those that are necessary for the optimization (required cookies) of the website (e.g., cookies that provide measurable insights into the web audience), shall be stored on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, unless a different legal basis is cited. The operator of the website has a legitimate interest in the storage of required cookies to ensure the technically error-free and optimized provision of the operator’s services. You have the option to set up your browser in such a manner that you will be notified any time cookies are placed and to permit the acceptance of cookies only in specific cases. You may also exclude the acceptance of cookies in certain cases or in general or activate the delete-function for the automatic eradication of cookies when the browser closes. If cookies are deactivated, the functions of this website may be limited.

If other cookies and services are used on this website, you can find this information in this privacy policy.
